Why reel size, not gauge, drives the price
Home cine film is usually priced by how much film is on the reel. As a rule of thumb, a 3-inch spool holds about 50ft, a 5-inch about 200ft and a 7-inch about 400ft. Standard 8 and Super 8 usually cost the same for the same length. 16mm and 9.5mm are often priced separately or quoted. Some labs charge per foot, so the reel figures in the table for those labs are calculated from their published rate, and the provider page says so.
What to ask a cine lab
- Scanned frame by frame or filmed off a projector? Frame-by-frame scanning (sometimes in HD, 2K or higher) usually gives a steadier, sharper result than recording a projected image.
- Correct speed. Silent home film was usually shot at about 16 or 18 frames per second, and Super 8 sound at 18 or 24. Ask whether they match the original speed.
- Sound. Magnetic-stripe sound is sometimes extra.
- Cleaning and splice repairs. Are they included or charged on top?
- Your files. MP4 for viewing, and whether a higher-quality master (e.g. ProRes) is available.
